It is fun to cuddle with your significant other but what happens after a long overwhelming french kiss? You can’t see them, feel them or taste them, but your mouth is still home to entire colonies of bacteria. Don’t fear because kissing is actually healthy! And this is the reason why…

A short kiss on the lips or a long french kiss. It may give you clues about potential partners. Almost half of men and women break up after a bad kiss. Our lips are our most erogenous zone and arouse sensation and passion. Kissing can evoke strong feelings, even the image of a kiss. But should we be afraid of the bacteria that will be transferred after making out with our partner?

Oral bacteria

While most of these bacteria do us no harm, there are others that are pathogenic and can affect our health. The more you kiss with your beloved one, the more bacteria you share. But here’s the surprising twist: More bacteria mean a boost to your resistance. So kissing couples share resistance-boosting bacteria and in fact make each other healthier and stronger. 

Kissing is sharing

Kissing lovers build up resistance by exposing themselves to more bacteria and french kissing is a great example of exposure to a gigantic number of bacteria in a short time. 

Remco Kort, professor and scientist at Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO), investigated the effect of intimate kissing on the oral microbiota and observed the bacteria in most kiss receivers. (R. Kort, 2014) As many as 80 million in a kiss of just 10 seconds! Moreover getting in contact with more diverse bacteria is a good thing. So kissing is really healthy!
